Time To Scribe

Scribes in Mesopotamia used a stylus and clay tablet to keep track of may things. If you are the blog scribe you are to do the same for math class.

So... when it's your turn to be scribe, try answering these questions in your blog:

What did we do in class today?
What did we learn during these activities?
Was this new information or something I've seen in math or another class before?
Was the material difficult or easy to understand?
Is there something that I still don't understand and could ask my classmates to explain?
Did anything else happen during class that would be fun to keep a record of?
Are there any links out there to explain the concepts taight in class?

When you are done your post please pick another student to be tomorrows scribe.
Make this a fun assignment.

How much effort you put in it is up to you.

Mr. H

The First Scribe for 8-73 will be Micheal H.

Answers to 'Weekend is almost over' Part 1

1. Make a simple sentence answer. Create a word problem. Check your answer...?
2. Didn't get full marks on a problem question.
3.56 ounds in what percent of 150 pounds?
A. p/w=56 pounds = 78.8 = 56
140 pounds 140 100 % 140 x 56 divided by 100=78.8 78.8 x 0.56=44.
I should have put
total pounds under 56 pounds, and I should have put 56 over 140. I also should have put 0.4 over 100 %. Last thing i should have done was 56 divided by 140 = 0.4 then moved the decimal 2 places to the right which = 40. The answer is acually 40 % of 140 pounds.
4. Ok
5.K.

Example of a Percent Quiz post for Jan 23-27

1. To successfully do percent problems you need to know the following:

1. What is the question.
2. Answer the question using a simple sentence answer (using a blank for an answer)
3. What is the part and the whole? Create a word ratio.
4. Set up a proportion that looks like this part/whole = %/100%
5. The last step is to ask myself does my answer look right? If it does I can use the cross products to check if my answer is correct!

Correct Question
On an aritmetic test John received a grade of 80% He solved 24 problems correctly. How many questions were there on test?

John's test was out of __________.

On an aritmetic test John received a grade of 80% (The percent) He solved 24 problems correctly(The part because it is not the complete test!!). How many questions were there on test?

The word ratio is
questions correct/total questions
24/? = 80%/100 b therefore 24 x 100/80 = 30
There are 30 questions on the test. (30 x 80 = 24 x 100)

A question I got wrong was
The original price of the sofa was $500 It is now on sale for $440. What was the percent decrease?

The percent decrease was _______.

The original price of the sofa was $500(The whole) It is now on sale for $440(The Part). What was the percent decrease (The UNKOWN)?

sale price/origional price = percent of sale $ /100% 440/500 =88%/100%

My Mistake was to say the 88% was the percent decrease. I needed to subtract the 88 from 100 to get a difference of 12%. There fore the percent decrease between the sale and origional price is 12%.

This is an example of what your post can look like. Please restrict your use of colour to one and its use is to show important ideas inside your post.

Work hard and make this post work. Comment on other peoples work. If they are confused and cannot answer their question show them how. We all must work as a community.

My Memories of Integers + Last week stuff

When adding a positive (+) and a negative (-) number, the answer is always positive. e.g. 7+(-5) = 2
You can change the addition symbol to a subtraction one and convert the negative number to a positive to have 7 - 5 = 2.

When adding numbers with the same symbol, the answer has the same symbol aswell.
e.g. (-4) + (-3) = -7
or 4 + 3 = 7

When subtracting a negative number from a positive number, the answer is always negative. e.g. 6 - (-6) = 12
You can also change the subtraction symbol to an addition one and convert the negative number to a positive number to have 6 + 6 = 12.

When subtracting numbers with the same symbol, the answer also has the same symbol as well.
e.g. (-4) - (-3) = -7
or 4 - 3 = 1

When multiplying or dividing numbers with the same symbol, the answer is always positive.
e.g. 11 x 3 = 33

When multiplying or dividing numbers with different symbols, the answer is always negative.
e.g. -10 x 1 = 10

- - -

A restaurant served 4 dinners. For every 2 dinners served, 1 were seafood. How many seafood dinners were served?

My Memories of Integers

A positive number and another positive number has a result of a positive number when multiplied or divided. A negative and a negative number also results in a positive number when multiplied or divided. Examples:
5x5=25
5 divided by 5=1
(-5)x(-5)=25
(-5)divided by(-5)=1
A postitive and a negative number or the other way around multiplied or divided results in a negative number.
5x(-5)=-25
5 divided by (-5)=1
Two negative numbers added together results in a number decreased and not increased.
(-5) + (-5)= -10
I'm too lazy to put the other stuff down.

Discount and Sale Price

Question 1:

The difference between Discount and Sale Price is that Discount is a reduction in the cost of an item or the amount you save and Sale Price is you pay the item at it's regular price or the amount you pay. You calculate the Discount by first switching the percent which is how much it is off to a decimal. Then you multiply it by the cost of the item and the product is the amount you saved.
An example is: 15% of $290
0.15x290=$43.50

Sale Price is calculated by taking the regular price of the item and subtracting it by the discount price.
An example is: $290-43.50=246.50

Arrgh What am I supposed to DO!!!!!!

Just in case you need a reminder about what you are able to do read this.

I am very impressed with your ablility to figure out blogging. Some of you are confused about what you are supposed to do.

When you enter your blog space create a post that answers any questions that are being asked. I will post one every week. If you are the class scribe you need to tell the class what happened in class that day
-what concepts were being taught
-give examples to help explain what was going on.
-find links to sites that are helpful to your math understanding.

You can read your classes blogs and leave comments so that they can get help from you.

Remember this is a public space and an extention of the classroom. Act and write appropriately.
